This plant is a member of the Fabaceae, or pea family. This genus contains branched, annual herbs with saucer-shaped glands at the base of the leaf stalk, leaflets of 5-20 pairs and yellow flowers. This plant is native to the U.S. and is found in forested or natural areas, open woods and in disturbed areas along roadsides. It is also used in landscaping as herbaceous or woody ornamental flowering shrubs. When consumed in large quantities, the seeds of this plant are toxic.
